Your Basal Metabolic Rate

What is BMR?

Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest — just to keep you alive. This accounts for roughly 60-75% of your total daily calorie expenditure.

BMR is calculated using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is widely considered the most accurate formula for estimating BMR in most adults:

Men: (10 × weight kg) + (6.25 × height cm) − (5 × age) + 5
Women: (10 × weight kg) + (6.25 × height cm) − (5 × age) − 161

TDEE Estimate: To estimate your Total Daily Energy Expenditure, multiply your BMR by an activity factor: Sedentary (1.2) · Lightly active (1.375) · Moderately active (1.55) · Very active (1.725) · Extra active (1.9).
